A sensor that watches a doorway, because that is all it can see. The NorthStar T1 sits in the middle of the ceiling and covers 360 degrees from that point, so the corners are in the field too.
The beam leaves and returns, which is how radar measures movement rather than proximity. It carries about 7 m in open space, which is why it still reads the corridor through your front door.

If you live in a apartment building, possibly yes. The reach is about 5 to 7 meters, whether through a wall or in open space.
Do I have to run new cables in my house?+
Depends where you position it. The unit is powered by a 5V USB-C supply, which can be hidden in a ceiling void or behind a wall plate.
What happens when it trips?+
Your iPhone gets the room and the time. Treat it as a head start, not a replacement for armed response.
